Many successful companies are built around charismatic leaders. Their success is often tied to that leader’s ability to persuade, inspire, and build strong relationships. While this can create momentum, it can also become a risky strategy if the company depends too heavily on one person.

Level 5 Leadership Builds Sustainable Companies

In Good to Great, widely regarded as one of the best business books of all time, Jim Collins presents conclusions that were heavily based on research into what separates great companies from good ones. One key finding is that the strongest-performing companies are often led by Level 5 leaders: leaders who build strong teams, then support and empower those teams to guide the company forward.

By contrast, a company built primarily around a charismatic leader can become vulnerable over time. If that leader leaves, the organization may be left without direction. Potential buyers may also view this dependence as a risk, especially when the leader is also the owner.

Be a Level 5 leader. Build a strong team, empower that team to lead, and create a company that can grow sustainably beyond any single individual.
